Dance workshops during festival are for many an essential part in bringin their dancing skills to another level. We encourage you to take explore what we and the great team of teachers got for you. There are two general levels of the classes – “beginners” – quite obviously for those with none or very little experience in bal folk and “open” – for those who already master the basics.
All the workshops on the “open” level require a decent knowledge of basis of balfolk couple dances (scottish, mazurka, waltz). Workshops on this level will be held n English.

Take it slow
Here and there, even a folk band announces “le slow”. Ever wondered how it really, really looks like? This workshop will show you that, and even more! We will use the slow blues also as a starting point to pin down what can make for a cozy and comfortable downtempo dance in general. Whether it’s a cuddly mazurka, laid back scottish or a lazy valse. Learning to take it slow and enjoy the moment can never hurt, right?
Mikuláš Bryan works hard on promoting bal folk on the Czech scene, while also teaching blues dancing and dance technique on a regular basis. His other dancing background consists of tango, swing, salsa and, balboa with jazz and contemporary workshops here and there. Although he approaches every dance with a deep respect for its roots and traditions, he always aspires to broaden its horizons and create a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Fusion between two traditional dances that, despite an origin faraway in space, meet one with the other in an embrace. Different technical skills from the tango will be treated and applied into the mazurka, such as carrile, rebotes, barridas, sacadas, colgadas, volcadas… to create a mazurka that becomes more free, open and alive.
Folqué? Is an association founded by Francesco Palmeri and María Cubero in order to promote Bal Folk and organize dance classes, workshops, concerts, balls and festivals. María encountered the world of balfolk dancing in 2005 and fell in love with it instantly. She’s been participating in many workshops and festivals and since 2011 became a teacher herself, giving regular dance classes as well as workshops during festivals in Spain, Portugal and France. 2011 also marks her introduction to the world of tango – key element to her professional career. Studying and dancing it intensively, María becomes a tango teacher in 2015. Francesco first starts with tango (in 2010) and only after gets to know balfolk dancing (in 2011). As he’s a guitarist he also starts Bal Folk Jam Session in Madrid. Since 2013 he teaches weekly balfolk dance classes in Madrid. From 2014 to 2016 he works as a coordinator in the Andanças festival, organizing the artistic residency Ethno Portugal. Together – María and Francesco – create Folqué? in 2015 and start teaching weekly classes and give workshops during many European festivals (eg. Fest-i-ball, Lisbon; Hemofolk, Belgium and others in Spain, Portugal and Italy). Their philosophy focuses on the most innovative and dynamic features of bal folk, including external influences.
Connection and musicality in couple dances
Taking inspiration from tangos, valses, mazurkas, scottishes, milongas, forros… we will explore the resources for couple dancing focusing much on the musical aspect of it. Immerse yourself in the steps, embody in the dance, embody the music. Connect with the partner, the dancers, the dance area. Connect by posture, abrazo, intention, listening, trust, there are so many ways! Try to feel and play with pulsations, accents, pace changes, phrasing in the music. All in order to nourish the creativity and blend in while dancing in a couple to create a unique ‘four-legged animal’.
Rémy Tatard an extraordinary and resourceful musician, but also a talented dancer and dance teacher. You can hear his dance style in his compositions and you can recognize his playing in his dancing. His inspirations know no boundaries, but apart from bafolk, his greatest inspiration and deepest experience is tango. He’s been teaching his perspective on connection and musicality on many occasions in France, Portugal and Belgium.
La valse d’Amélie Poulain, spice up your waltz in 3
Let’s use Yann Tiersen’s gorgeous wlatzes to work on rhythmic variations and musicality. The time when you just put yourself in the waltz rhythm and let you float until the end, is over! We will study the challenging waltzes, the lively ones, the astonishing ones, the ones who changes from wild energy to sweet whisper.
Claire Favillier is organizing balls with Paris Bal Folk, teaching couple dances at Folk Lab, and writing a blog about dancing www.creactiviste.fr. Enthusiastic activist for a dance without gender boundaries, for lead-sharing, and active involvement of followers in the dance, she takes inspiration in tango, blues, lindy and forro and adds it to her vision of dance.
Waltz in three times
Practice in dancing waltzes is useful on almost every dance floor in Europe. An additional challenge awaits us in spinning in tight spaces, in which, however, dance sensations can be the most pleasant. Dance and movement experiments integrated into the path of the workshop will lead us into the realm of the dance secrets of good contact in couple and smooth flow in a bal-space. In this land it will turn out that free spinning is not the heart of the dance, but it can create a common ground for something more in the dance – something that can be experienced by both dancers at the same time.
Workshops are composed for beginner dancers, although selected elements of the program will effectively help more experienced dancers to improve their skills.
Dominik Wóltański – a long-distance enthusiast and spinnig dances practitioner, whether they come from Poland, Sweden, Hungary or elsewhere, co-founder and motor of the group n obrotów from Toruń.
Mazurka is one of the most recognized dances of bal folk. A calm, ternary rhythm leaves space for improvisation, which makes every dance can be unique and unforgettable.
The aim of these workshops is to introduce the participants to the specific rhythm of the mazurka and its basic step. We will also focus on topics related to leading and following, as well as on the correct posture – both individually and in couple.
WroBal – Magda and Filip – a couple of dancers infected with love for bal folk. They regularly develop their skills during workshops in Poland and abroad. The diversity offered by bal folk is what attracts them most – on the one hand dances in circles and chains, giving all participants a sense of community, on the other – couple dances that allow a certain dose of individualism and self-expression, while requiring to find reference in a dynamic space of a dance floor. As WroBal, they have been working in Wrocław for over two years, organizing regular bal folk events and beginner’s workshops.
